It wasn't quite that trite of a story, but actor-singer Levi Kreis, who starred as legendary rocker Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet — first at the Goodman Theatre, then at the show's current home at the Apollo Theater and later on Broadway — did just that.

I don't know if singer-songwriter Levi Kreis ever pictured himself winning a major creative award, but if he did, it's a safe bet he was thinking it would be a Grammy rather than a Tony. As he tells the story, he's said to have been singing since he was a baby in a crib, using a crayon as his mock microphone.

Levi Kreis personified Jerry Lee Lewis in the musical Million Dollar Quartet. After taking the show to New York and winning a Tony, the talented (and out) singer returns to Chicago to reunite in the space where it all began with the cast and play a solo show as well.

DirectorsLabChicago is an organization that creates environments (including an annual summer symposium) for stage directors from around the world to gather, exchange ideas, and develop their craft. To further their mission of bringing the highest level of quality to the Lab, they have organized a week-long auction on eBay. The items up for auction will be autographed pages of notes written during the rehearsals of some of the most important recent productions in the American theater. Director Eric Schaeffer has graciously contributed two pages of his notes from the Broadway production of the Chicago-born hit, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, as well as the title page from his personal copy of the script.

One night in Memphis has turned into a 15-month Chicago run for Million Dollar Quartet, as well as a Broadway engagement this spring. Although the original boys have headed out East, the new Chicago versions of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash still know how to rock the Apollo Theater.
